Sodak Angus Ranch, located on Rabbit Creek 5miles east and 8 miles south of Reva, South Dakota, was homesteaded in 1909 by Vaughns grandparents Otto and Vivian Meyer. Otto raised registered Shorthorn and Hereford cattle. In 1956 their son Raymond added registered Red Angus cattle to the operation. While seeking new bloodlines for the Red Angus herd a registered Black Angus herd was added in 1972. The first Black Angus females were purchased from the Martin Jorgenson family and other females were later added from Schearbrook Farms and N Bar Cattle Company.
Sodak is a family operation with over 52 years of performance testing. The ranch is operated by Vaughn and Lois Meyer and family. Currently we are running 300 Black Angus and 200 Red Angus mature cows. In 1998 we started moving our cows to a fall calving program in order to better fit the environment and reduce labor and feed costs. Currently we raise approximately 150 bulls each year with the top 100 selling at our Spring Bull Sale at the ranch on the third Tuesday in February. Females are sold by private treaty in the fall.
At Sodak Angus our main emphasis is on selection for reproduction and the maternal traits. Sodak cows fit their environment. A Sodak cow must exhibit great maternal ability, soundness, efficiency and a good disposition. We strive to use only sound proven genetics in our grogram and the use of A.I., embryo transfer and ultrasound enables us to better manage our genetics.
